June 30th, the 17th Meeting of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare took place in Brussels, a key event for shaping the future of animal welfare in Europe.

Throughout the day, representatives from public administrations, organisations, researchers, and European projects discussed the progress and challenges in improving animal welfare across the EU.

Among the highlighted sessions were discussions on the state of play of the modernisation of EU legislation on on-farm animal welfare, the follow-up to the European Citizens' Initiative “Fur Free Europe”, and scientific updates on the phasing out of farrowing crates for lactating sows.

In this context, the WelFarmers Project took centre stage with a presentation by Edgar Manzanilla, who outlined the project’s objectives and innovative approach to improving pig welfare across Europe through direct collaboration with farmers, advisors, veterinarians, and researchers.

The session was introduced by Andrea Gavinelli from the European Commission, who remarked:
"I am excited and happy that WelFarmers came together and is being presented to the rest of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare."

Several WelFarmers partners were present at the meeting, including representatives from Teagasc and SEGES Innovation, reaffirming the project’s commitment to international cooperation and the search for practical, sustainable solutions to improve animal welfare.
